Alexandra & Grégoire are proud to unveil their latest creation, the AQUILON Curiosity Cabinet, a unique fusion of art and craftsmanship that was presented at BARANZATE ATELIERS during Milan Design Week 2024. Originally set to be presented by Objects With Narratives Gallery at the PAD Design + Art Fair in Paris, in spring 2024, AQUILON encountered artistic and technical challenges that pushed the boundaries of their work, delaying its unveiling, but ultimately enriching its character. This creation represents a transformative journey, opening new possibilities and expanding the artistic horizons of Maison Jonckers.
A Unique Sculptural Masterpiece
The AQUILON Curiosity Cabinet stands as a singular piece of sculptural furniture, meticulously crafted from hand-engraved, shaped, and welded brass. The cabinet boasts a rough, oxidized finish, embodying an organic, weathered aesthetic that evolves over time. This unique cabinet is a 360° piece that can be viewed from all sides, and was designed to remain open to display rare or collectible objects.
Mythological Inspiration
The name AQUILON carries a deep mythological resonance. In both Greek and Roman mythology, the “Anemoi“ (Greek) or “Venti“ (Latin) are the deities of the winds, spirits born of Heaven and Earth. Their essence is tied to the seasons: “Borée“ (North Wind) brings the chill of winter; “Zephyr“ (West Wind) ushers in the breezes of spring; “Notos“ (South Wind) foretells late summer storms; and “Euros“ (East Wind) heralds the tempestuous autumn. Among the Romans, “Borée“ transforms into “AQUILON“, the swift and cold wind of the north, likened to the eagle, majestic and fast as the king of the skies.
This mythological reference is reflected in the design of the AQUILON Curiosity Cabinet. The raw brass , engraved and shaped by hand, bears traces reminiscent of wind-sculpted landscapes, etched, beaten, and weathered as if by the very forces of nature. Whether representing gentle breezes or violent gusts, the craftsmanship leaves an indelible imprint, a testament to the artistry of Alexandra and Grégoire Jonckers.
